Kim Jong-un firing a handgun – video released by North Korean state news agency (VIDEO)

 ---

Amid escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula, the North Korean state news agency releases footage of Kim Jong-un joining in with some target practice during a military drill.

On this video Kom Jong-un is apparently attending target practice with a handgun.

The North Korean military warned yesterday that it had been authorized to attack the US, and South Korea's defence minister claimed its neighbor had moved a missile with "considerable range" to the east coast, potentially able to hit targets in the South or Japan.

South Korea has reportedly deployed two warships with missile-defence systems in response.

  1. 'No surprise if North Korea conducts new missile test'....

WASHINGTON - The United States would not be surprised if North Korea were to conduct a new missile test, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Friday.

Asked about indications that North Korea might be preparing to launch a test missile amid rising tensions in the region, Carney said White House officials had seen the reports.

"We would not be surprised to see them take such an action," Carney said. "We have seen them launch missiles in the past."

  6. N. Korea fires projectile into sea for 2nd day.....

(ATTN: UPDATES throughout with quotes, presidential office's response, details; AMENDS headline, slug with military official saying it's unclear whether short-range missile or rockets were launched)....

    SEOUL, May 19 (Yonhap)
-- North Korea fired a projectile off the Korean Peninsula's east coast Sunday, Seoul military officials said, a day after the communist nation launched three short-range projectiles into the East Sea, ignoring South Korea's demands to stop such "provocative" actions.

It is not uncommon for North Korea to launch short-range missiles or projectiles, but the latest tests occurred as tensions triggered by the North's nuclear test in February seemed to be de-escalating.
South Korea's military detected the fourth launch of a projectile that was fired in a northeasterly direction over North Korean waters Sunday afternoon, a military official said.

  8. North, South Korea Agree Location for Sunday Talks....

MOSCOW, June 8 (RIA Novosti) - North and South Korea have agreed that talks slated for Sunday should be held in the demilitarized zone between the two countries, South Korean Yonhap news agency reported on Saturday, citing South Korean officials.

The talks are to be held in Panmunjom, an abandoned village in the demilitarized zone, where the armistice or cease-fire was signed in 1953 ending the Korean War, Yonhap reported.

On Thursday the two countries agreed to talks “in principle” about joint projects, and the following day announced their firm commitment to meeting on Sunday: only the location remained to be decided.

One of the key issues to be discussed is re-starting operations in the Kaesong Industrial Complex, which is home to 123 South Korean factories employing about 53,000 workers.

Work stopped there in April when North Korea withdrew all its workers as tension in the region escalated sharply, following additional UN sanctions imposed after North Korea carried out its third nuclear test in seven years in February.

Sunday's talks are set to begin at 10 am local time at Freedom House in Panmunjom, Yonhap reported.

The initiative is timed to mark “the anniversary of the June 15 joint declaration,” North Korean state news agency KCNA cited the country’s reunification committee, responsible for relations with South Korea, as saying in a statement.

The joint declaration referred to was signed in 2000 following a bilateral summit, and ushered in a period of improved relations between the two states which technically remain "at war" as only an armistice, not a formal peace treaty, was signed at the end of the Korean War in 1953........http://en.rian.ru/world/20130608/181573339/North-South-Korea-Agree-Location-for-Sunday-Talks.html

  9. US, Seoul Map Out N. Korea Nuclear Deterrence Plan – Report...

MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) – The United States and South Korea have mapped out a joint plan that outlines measures to deter North Korea’s nuclear threat, Yonhap news agency said Sunday citing a government source.

The plan “encompasses political, diplomatic and military measures to specify how to provide a nuclear umbrella on the Korean Peninsula in the case of North Korean nuclear provocations,” the report said.

The document is expected to be signed at a security meeting between the US and South Korean defense chiefs on October 2.

"Making an official document detailing the US nuclear umbrella reflects its firm commitment against North Korea's atomic weapons threat," an anonymous source told the agency. "The deterrence plan can be considered equivalent to an operational plan," the source said....http://en.rian.ru/world/20130908/183272554/US-Seoul-Map-Out-N-Korea-Nuclear-Deterrence-Plan--Report.html

  10. N.Korean Coast Guard Opens Fire on Russian Vessel – Report...

VLADIVOSTOK, September 21 (RIA Novosti) – North Korea’s coast guard has opened fire on a Russian fishing vessel in the Sea of Japan, a spokesman for the fishing company said.

No one was injured in the shooting, and the vessel, the Altai, was not damaged, he said.

“The captain said his schooner was fired at from automatic weapons and with signal flares at 1:30 a.m. Vladivostok time on Saturday [14:30 GMT Friday] without any radio or visual warning signals from a vessel flying the flag of North Korea,” the spokesman told RIA Novosti.

The Altai, with a haul of crab, was heading from the port of Zarubino in Russia’s Primorye Territory to South Korea. People in military uniforms from the North Korean ship boarded the Altai, inspected it for about 10 minutes, questioned the captain and then left, he said.

The spokesman said that “North Korean coast guards [had] grossly violated the international law on maritime traffic” because they had failed to properly warn the Russian sailors of the inspection and started shooting immediately instead.
