"This comes as an important step forward in view of addressing concerns regarding selective justice in the country," said Ashton in a statement.
Ashton called on all sides of Ukraine to continue engaging in a meaningful dialogue to fulfill the legitimate democratic aspirations of the Ukrainian people.
She said that the EU expects everyone in Ukraine to behave responsibly with a view to protect the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the country, and the EU remains fully committed to support an inclusive political process, help de-escalate the situation and to assist Ukraine in the process of reform.
Tymoshenko, a key opposition leader, was convicted in October 2011 of abuse of power over a 2009 gas deal with Russia.
She was also charged with embezzling an estimated 405 million U.S. dollars and evading tax worth more than 87,000 dollars in the 1990s.

ReplyDeleteStaffers of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry appealed to the parliament on Saturday with a demand for the resignation of Acting Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara.
“Verkhovna Rada (the parliament) voted for the dismissal of Viktor Yanukovich as Ukrainian President for his failing to fulfil official duties,” they said in a collective appeal circulated by the ministry’s press service late on Saturday.
“In this regard, we believe that Acting Foreign Minister Kozhara has no moral right to represent the country on the international arena any longer” the appeal said, demanding the appointment of another person in charge of the ministry’s activity.

ReplyDeleteOleksandr Turchynov takes charge following the dismissal of President Viktor Yanukovych on Saturday. Mr Turchynov told MPs they had until Tuesday to form a new unity government.
Yulia Tymoshenko, who was freed from jail on Saturday, has ruled out becoming prime minister again.
Her release was one of the conditions of the EU-Ukraine trade pact that Mr Yanukovych rejected last year.
The move triggered the protests that led to the current crisis.

In der Ukraine besetzten die Gegner des abgesetzten Präsidenten Viktor Janukowitsch am Wochenende wichtige Positionen: Eine Schlüsselrolle spielte die erst aus der Haft entlassene Julia Timoschenko. Ihr Vertrauter, der erst am Samstag gekürte neue Parlamentspräsident Alexander Turtschinow ist am Sonntag zum Übergangspräsidenten des Landes gewählt worden.
Nach dem Umbruch mit der Absetzung von Janukowitsch hat das Parlament nun bis Dienstag Zeit zur Bildung einer neuen Regierung. "Ich rufe die Abgeordneten auf, sofort den Prozess zur Bildung einer neuen Parlamentsmehrheit und der Bildung einer Regierung der nationalen Einheit zu beginnen", sagte Turtschinow. Die neue Regierung müsse bis Dienstag stehen. Als Termin für die Wahl eines neuen Präsidenten war am Samstag der 25. Mai festgelegt worden. Yatsenyuk: no threat for Russian-speaking Ukrainians....

“It /the Russian-speaking population - eds. Itar-Tass/ is protected by the law,” Yatsenyuk said commenting on Verkhovna Rada’s decree on annulment of the law on state language policy. But he did not clarify which particular law ensured this protection.
MP Oleg Tyagnibok, leader of the far-right Svoboda party, promised to initiate a new bill on regional languages.
“That bill /on ethnic groups/ was adopted with a gross violation of law,” he said. “I had talks with some representatives of national minorities at the parliament. We will have to adopt a new law on languages in the shortest term, the law that will satisfy everybody.”
“I’m telling you that no ethnic group will be repressed in any issue including language,” Tyagnibok said.

Ukraine: Janukowitschs Partei spricht von feiger Flucht und Verrat...
ReplyDeleteDie Partei der Regionen wirft dem abgesetzten Viktor Janukowitsch vor, die Ukraine betrogen und ausgeraubt zu haben. Wo sich der Ex-Präsident befindet, ist unbekannt.
Während sein momentaner Aufenthaltsort unbekannt bleibt, scheint die Frage nach dem politischen Einfluss des abgesetzten Präsidenten nun klarer zu beantworten. Janukowitsch sei "eine politische Leiche", sagte Kyril Savin, Leiter der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in Kiew dem Deutschlandfunk: Er sei heute allein, die ganze alte Regierung sei weg, seine Abgeordneten seien gar nicht mehr im Parlament oder hätten mit der Opposition gestimmt. Es spiele fast schon keine Rolle mehr, "was Janukowitsch meint und sagt".
Zu dieser Einschätzung passt eine Erklärung von Janukowitschs Partei der Regionen, die der Guardian in englischer Sprache dokumentiert. Seine ehemaligen Gefolgsleute versuchen dort, maximale Distanz zu seinem gestürzten Regime herzustellen: "Wir verurteilen die feige Flucht von Janukowitsch. Wir verurteilen den Verrat. Wir verurteilen die kriminellen Befehle an normale Leute, Soldaten und Offiziere." Allerdings warnt die Partei auch vor "massiven Einschüchterungen und Lynchjustiz".
Noch deutlicher wird der Text in Bezug auf Janukowitschs persönliche Schuld: "Die Ukraine wurde betrogen und ausgeraubt, aber selbst dies ist nichts im Vergleich zu dem Schmerz, den Dutzende von ukrainischen Familien erleiden, die ihre Lieben auf der einen oder der anderen Seite verloren haben. (…) Die gesamte Verantwortung dafür liegt bei Janukowitsch und seiner nächsten Umgebung."
"Er muss psychisch krank sein"
Die Partei wälzt alles auf ihren Ehrenvorsitzenden ab. Der leistete sich offenbar ein luxuriöses Leben. Tausende von Ukrainern besichtigen derzeit dessen Residenz Meschiguirja nahe Kiew. Was sie in der einst verborgenen Villa sehen, macht sie fassungslos: ein riesiges Haus, ausgedehnte Rasenflächen, ein eigener Golfplatz und ein Zoo. "Ich bin schockiert", sagt die pensionierte Soldatin Natalija Rudenko, während sie über den mit Hasen- und Hirsch-Statuen bestückten Rasen blickt. "In einem Land mit so viel Armut, wie kann ein Mensch da so viel besitzen? Er muss psychisch krank sein."
