WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, said on Sunday it would be a "grave mistake" for Russia to send military forces into Ukraine and that it is not in the interest of Russia, Europe or the United States to see Ukraine split apart.
Speaking on the NBC program "Meet the Press," Rice was asked about a possible scenario in which Russia would send forces into Ukraine to restore a government more friendly to Moscow.
"That would be a grave mistake. It's not in the interests of Ukraine or of Russia or of Europe or the United States to see a country split. It's in nobody's interest to see violence return and the situation escalate," Rice said.
"There is not an inherent contradiction ... between a Ukraine that has longstanding historic and cultural ties to Russia and a modern Ukraine that wants to integrate more closely with Europe. This need not be mutually exclusive," Rice said following the political upheaval in Ukraine.

At least 1,000 protesters block off Kharkov regional administration building....
ReplyDeleteKHARKOV, February 24. /ITAR-TASS/. At least 1,000 rioters continue to block off the Kharkov administration’s building.
Barricades are being erected and “self-defense posts” are patrolling..
There are no supporters of the local administration although several thousands of people were at the building last night. Traffic has not been blocked off.
The opposition is staying in the administration’s building: it has organized a medical aid post and a dining room on the ground floor. Leaders of Kharkov’s Maidan, as well as several radical groups, are on the first flood.
Governor Mikhail Dobkin has not arrived yet in the office. At 13:00 Moscow time he is expected to meet journalists. No reports on postponing the news conference are available yet. However, it is not clear if the governor is able to come to the building.
On Sunday, the opposition did not allow either the governor or Kharkov Mayor Gennady Kernes to enter the building.
In the meantime, Dobkin and Kernes said they did not intend to resign.

Украина приглашена принять участие во встрече министров обороны НАТО 26-27 февраля в Брюсселе в рамках консультаций стран-членов Международных сил по содействию безопасности в Афганистане (ИСАФ).
