PACE calls into question legitimacy of decisions of new Ukrainian authorities. - Senator

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is calling into question the legitimacy of decisions made by the new Ukrainian authorities, which have violated the agreement of February 21st that was signed by the two sides involved in the Ukrainian conflict, Vice Speaker of the Russian Federation Council Ilyas Umakhanov said.
"The Juridical Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has decided to file a query report to the Venice Commission about the legitimacy of the decisions made by the new Ukrainian authorities in violation of the agreement of February 21st," the senator stressed.

Commenting on the press conference of Russia’s President on the situation in Ukraine, Umakhanov emphasized that the substantial answers of Vladimir Putin offered proof of Russia’s well-thought-out and consistent position on that score.

The Russian MP mentioned that last Saturday the Federation Council passed a decision providing for its approval for the use of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine for the stabilization of the social and political situation in the country.

"The events that followed the previously mentioned decision have shown that it was absolutely correct and timely for the protection of the Russian military facilities in Crimea and that it was good for cooling down the "hot heads " of all those who planned to send the so-called "trains of friendship" to restore order in Crimea and in other Ukrainian regions, in their own way," the senator stressed .

  • "From the juridical point of view, there are a few arguments in favour of the new Ukrainian authorities, and those in the West are already "sobering up, the Russian senator said. As an example he mentioned an article published in the French newspaper "Le Figaro".

As regards the situation in Ukraine, both Russia and the West have certain concerns, which should be discussed by means of a constructive dialogue, Ilyas Umakhanov said.

"In any case, focus should be put on Ukraine’s interests and the interests of the Ukrainian people, not the attempts of political "rope-walking", Umakhanov said. And the situation in the neighbouring country must return to the constitutional field.
