Ukrainian Navy flagship takes Russia’s side – report

Ukraine’s Navy flagship, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, has reportedly refused to follow orders from Kiev, and come over to Russia’s side and is returning home after taking part in NATO operation in the Gulf of Aden flying the Russian naval flag.
There has been conflicting information on where exactly the vessel is, but a Russian senator has confirmed to Izvestia daily that the frigate defected to the Russian side.
Ukraine’s Navy flagship the Hetman Sahaidachny has come over to our side today. It has hung out the St Andrew’s flag,” Senator Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on the international affairs, told Izvestia daily.

  • He said the flagship is on its way back to the Black Sea after drills in the Mediterranean. “The crew has fulfilled the order by the chief commander of Ukraine’s armed forces Viktor Yanukovich,” he added.
The move comes after the Navy command resigned Friday. Self-appointed President Aleksandr Turchinov made Rear Admiral Denis Berezovsky the new Navy Chief, a statement published on the President’s website Saturday said.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Prime Minister Ukraine’s self-imposed government, had earlier asked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan not to let the frigate through the Bosporus strait, according to the Kiev Times. The ship captain and the head of Ukraine’s contingent in the operation, Rear Admiral Andrey Tarasov disobeyed orders from Kiev.

The Hetman Sahaidachny returns to Sevastopol, Crimea after taking part in a joint counter-piracy operation with NATO and the EU off the Horn of Africa, reported UNN on Friday, citing Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. On February 26, after crossing the Suez Canal, the ship entered the Mediterranean Sea and was expected to be in Sevastopol in early March.

By saying so he has commented in his Twitter to the information that Ukraine’s former presidents Leonid Kravchuk, Leonid Kuchma and Viktor Yushchenko called to terminate the Kharkov Agreement on the base of the Russian Fleet in Crimea.

“The Black Sea Fleet is not homeless. Sevastopol is its home. And you should rather deal with your grandchildren,” Rogozin wrote.

  2. Report: Russian servicemen confiscate weapons in Crimea region...

Russian military servicemen have taken weapons from a radar base and naval training facility in Ukraine's Crimea region and urged personnel to side with the peninsula's "legitimate" leaders, Interfax news agency said on Sunday.

It quoted a Ukrainian Defense Ministry source as saying the Russian servicemen had taken pistols, rifles and ammunition cartridges from the radar post near in the town of Sudak and taken them away by car.

Another group of Russian military had also removed weapons from a Ukrainian navy training center in the port city of Sevastopol, where Russia's Black Sea Fleet also has a base.

  3. ‘Any government willing to cooperate with the IMF will be heralded as legitimate’...

The West's proposed financial aid will not solve Ukraine’s economic problems, but increase austerity, professor of political economy Jeffrey Sommers told RT.

If the self-proclaimed government in Kiev cooperates with the IMF, it will be regarded as legitimate in the West, even if its decisions are unpopular in Ukraine itself, Sommers says.

RT: Who do you think would be willing to foot that bill of $35 billion that Ukraine needs to stay afloat?

Jeffrey Sommers: I think it is certainly unlikely that either the EU or the US will come up with that level of funding especially given the tendency towards cutting budgets and austerity in either country. Now of course the IMF very much would like to come forward with the stabilization program and of course this would result in austerity being imposed on the Ukrainian economy and people but it is just difficult to say whether they’ll muster the political will to come with that level of funding and it does not really do anything to solve medium to long run problems in the Ukrainian economy anyway.

RT: Many within the country consider the current government illegitimate, would international organisations, like the IMF, be open to dealing with it?

JS: Well I think unfortunately any government that expresses its willingness to working with IMF in imposing the structural adjustment is going to be heralded as legitimate and so represent the popular will whether it does or does not..................http://rt.com/op-edge/ukraine-budget-west-aid-419/
