US not to recognize Crimea referendum results, threatens Russia with sanctions

The United States won't recognize the results of the referendum in Crimea because it considers it to be illegal, Dan Pfeiffer, a senior White House advisor, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" talk show.

Russia is responsible for what's happening Ukraine and will face Western sanctions, he said.

The US is working with its partners throughout the world, including European allies, to get countries to step up pressure on Russia by imposing sanctions against it, Pfeiffer said.

Earlier, President Barack Obama signed an order on possible penalties against Russian officials and organizations if Moscow doesn't back down on Ukraine, he said.

"You can expect sanctions designations in the coming days," Pfeiffer said. "Designations" mean that individual officials and organizations subject to sanctions will be identified.

Russia risks being isolated, Pfeiffer said as he recalled Saturday's vote at the UN Security Council.

The longer the conflict lasts, the greater price Russia will pay, he said.
