Moscow not to reconsider its foreign policy after PACE's resolution on Ukraine. - Aleksei Pushkov

Russia won’t change its foreign policy and principles in spite of a resolution adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on April 9, Aleksei Pushkov, the head of the Russian State Duma Committee for International Affairs and the head of the Russian delegation to PACE, said.

"The organization has adopted a lot of resolutions and we shouldn’t exaggerate their significance. We won’t urgently change our foreign policy and principles in spite of the fact that the PACE has called upon us to act as it wants. If the majority of the Assembly thinks that Russia is incompatible with the principles of the Council of Europe, its members should think whether they are compatible with these principles or not," Pushkov said.

"Russia is ready to be a member of the PACE, if its members are ready to have a dialogue with Russia. However, if Russia's colleagues at the PACE can only blame Russia, the latter will deny Russia's membership in the organization," Pushkov said.

  • At the same time, Aleksei Pushkov says that Russia hasn’t changed its opinion yet and won’t leave the PACE. However, if the majority of the Assembly decides to expel Russia, the latter will prepare a corresponding response.

Russia’s delegation considers the speech of Ukrainian delegation to be preposterous. While discussing Ukrainian resolution on April 9, Ukrainian delegation claimed that "everything was going well in the country", TASS reports.

  • "I was amazed by the speech of Ukraine’s delegation as there is no trustworthiness in its words. The delegation claims that 'Ukraine doesn’t have any problems – all national minorities are happy and everyone lives in the conditions of complete democracy and complete freedom of speech'," Aleksei Pushkov stated.

"I think that a range of facts of Ukrainian delegation’s speech is quite comical. I also want to add that not only Russia, but some other members of the Assembly feel this way."During the debates on Ukrainian issue, Ukraine’s delegation tried to persuade the Assembly’s members that "there is a threat of Russia’s intervention in Ukraine."

  • At the same time, the delegation claimed that the country had no problems even when Russia, Hungary, Moldavia and the Netherlands mentioned particular facts.

"This is ridiculous! Ukraine is on the verge of default. Ten million people in the east of the country don’t recognize Ukraine’s government and vote for federalization. The country is about to collapse – eight thousand people have armed; while the Verkhovna Rada has decided to disarm these people, they claim that they will obtain more arms. The country lacks the Constitution, lawfulness and legitimacy of the government," Pushkov said.

  5. PACE to consider ‘Crimean sanctions’ against Russian delegation...

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Thursday will consider the issue of sanctions against Russia’s delegation for reunification of Crimea with Russia. The Assembly will discuss a report by head of the PACE Monitoring Committee Stefan Schennach, which deals with the Russian delegation’s powers in the PACE.

The reporter proposes to choose the so-called “soft option” of sanctions and deprive the Russian delegation of the right to vote at PACE meetings until the end of the year, but not to freeze Russia’s membership in the Assembly, as British MP Robert Walter proposes. The report’s concept has been supported by two-thirds of the PACE relevant committee.

Schennach’s draft resolution calls Russia’s action on reunification with Crimea a “violation of international law.” Thereby, the PACE intends to denounce “the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity” and send “a strong message” to Moscow.

The draft resolution also says that “a political dialogue should remain the most preferable method of search for compromise” and that “there should be no return to the cold war stereotypes.” The suspension of the Russian delegation’s powers would make such a dialogue impossible, parliamentarians of the Council of Europe admit. In this connection, the PACE in its resolution is ready “to confirm the powers of the Russian delegation,” but at the same time “to suspend its right to vote until the end of the 2014 session.”

Head of the Russian delegation in PACE, Chairman of the International Affairs Committee at the State Duma lower house of parliament Alexei Pushkov has stated that “Russia is ready for dialogue with PACE,” but “if the issue of stripping the Russian delegation of its powers in the Assembly is raised, Russia will quit the organization itself”. “We will not stick to an organization that is ready to exclude us,” Pushkov added.........http://en.itar-tass.com/world/727180
