Putin meets Ukrainian president-elect during D-Day ceremony (for 15 minutes)

PARIS, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday held talks with the newly-elect Ukrainian head of state Petro Poroshenko, on the sidelines of D-day landings commemoration in Normandy, north France, local medias reported.

Citing source close to the presidency office, the Elysee, the news channel BFMTV said Putin spoke with Poroshenko for 15 minutes about possible measures to de-escalate violence in Ukraine.

French president Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined the first informal meeting between Moscow and Kiev top officials in the Chateau de Benouville, in Normandy, where world leaders had lunch together.

  • According to the report, Putin and Poroshenko ended the meeting with a handshake in a likely sign of Russia's recognition of Poroshenko's legitimacy the day before he is sworn in.

  1. The leaders of Russia and Ukraine met on Friday for the first time since Moscow annexed Crimea as world leaders commemorated the 70th anniversary of the World War Two D-Day landings in France....

French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel brought together Russia's Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian president-elect Petro Poroshenko for a 15-minute meeting before an official lunch for visiting world dignitaries.

Hollande's office said the two men shook hands and agreed that detailed talks on a ceasefire between Kiev government forces and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine would begin within a few days.

They also discussed political steps to de-escalate the crisis including Russian recognition of Poroshenko's election as well as economic relations.

"It was a normal, serious exchange between two leaders," an official in Hollande's office said, adding that the meeting had been prepared by several days of contacts but kept secret until it happened.

"This marks tentative progress which he (Hollande) welcomes, particularly given this occasion so symbolic for peace."........http://www.todayonline.com/world/russia-ukraine-leaders-shake-hands-talk-d-day-event

  2. Putin has brief conversation with Obama — Peskov...

Russian President Vladimir Putin has had a brief conversation with US President Barack Obama during festive events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings in France, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.

“Despite the fact that there was no separate meeting, the two heads of state got an opportunity to exchange opinions on the situation in Ukraine and the crisis in Ukraine’s south-east. Putin and Obama agreed on the necessity to reduce violence and combat operations as soon as possible,” Peskov said.

It was the first meeting of the two leaders since the start of the crisis in Ukraine, which remains the key problem in the relations between Moscow and the West.

The positions of Russia on the one hand and Kiev and the West on the other are fundamentally different on events that have happened in Ukraine since the end of last year...........http://en.itar-tass.com/world/735111

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a short conversation with Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel before a formal lunch in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landing.

All guests of the solemn celebrations went out for a joint photo session in front of the Benouville Castle in Normandy. Putin's conversation with Poroshenko and Merkel took place after the session, on the way to the nearby building for a lunch.

Putin and Poroshenko agreed that the Ukrainian crisis may only be settled by peaceful political means, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

Putin and Poroshenko both spoke in favor of putting an end to the ongoing bloodshed in Ukraine’s south-eastern territories, Peskov added.
