Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul is to hold a summit in the Turkish capital following the attack on the Turkish Consulate in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul by militants of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
The meeting at the Cankaya Presidential Palace is attended by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chief of General Staff General Necdet Ozel, Deputy Prime Minister Beshir Atalay, Deputy Foreign Minister Naci Koru and the National Intelligence Organization Undersecretary Hakan Fidan.
The meeting started at 7 p.m. local time (1700 GMT).

- Turkey says will retaliate if citizens held in Iraq are harmed
Turkey will retaliate if any of its citizens and diplomats held by militants in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul are harmed, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Wednesday.
"Right now we are engaged in calm crisis management, considering our citizens' security. This should not be misunderstood. Any harm to our citizens and staff would be met with the harshest retaliation," Davutoglu told reporters in New York in comments broadcast on Turkish television.

The Iraqi defense ministry issued a statement in which it asserted that the army regained control over Tikrit and vowed to strike ISIL terrorists in Mosul in order to impose the governmental authority in the city.
ISIL militants had taken control of the Iraqi city of Tikrit and freed hundreds of prisoners on Wednesday, police said.
According to AFP, Iraqi security forces repelled an assault by militants Wednesday on the highly sensitive city of Samarra.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said there was "no question" of British troops being sent back to Iraq to help battle Islamic militants who have seized control of key cities....
ReplyDeleteHague said while the situation was of great concern, the government was "not countenancing at this stage any British military involvement." He said he believed Iraq had sufficient forces to counter the threat.

Iraqi Kurds 'fully control Kirkuk' as army flees...
ReplyDeleteIraqi Kurdish forces say they have taken full control of the northern oil city of Kirkuk as the army flees before an Islamist offensive nearby.
"The whole of Kirkuk has fallen into the hands of peshmerga," Kurdish spokesman Jabbar Yawar told Reuters. "No Iraq army remains in Kirkuk now."
Kurdish fighters are seen as a bulwark against Sunni Muslim insurgents who seized towns in the region this week.
The fall of the city of Mosul sent shock waves across the Middle East.
