Accompanied by Cuban leader Raul Castro, Xi flew to the Cuban "Heroic City," where he laid a wreath at the tomb of Jose Marti, a Cuban national hero and an important figure in Latin American literature.
The Chinese president also visited the Moncada Barracks, where former Cuban leader Fidel Castro launched a failed assault on July 26, 1953, which is widely considered as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. The barracks have now been turned into a museum and a school city.
Speaking at the July 26 Historical Museum, Xi noted that both China and Cuba boast a glorious revolutionary history and that "revolutionary martyrs are precious spiritual treasures that have inspired us to continuously march forward."
Only those who remember history deserve a better future, stressed the Chinese president.
In a friendly interaction with an enthusiastic crowd at the square in front of the municipal government, Xi said the Cuban people is a heroic people and Santiago de Cuba is a heroic city.
Beijing, he added, is confident that under the leadership of President Raul Castro and the Communist Party of Cuba, the Caribbean country will make greater achievements on the socialist path that fits its national conditions.
The two leaders also held a new round of talks to further exchange views on bilateral relations and issues of common concern.
Seeing Xi off at the airport, Castro said Xi's state visit to his country is a complete success, with the two sides reaching many new important agreements on further promoting China-Cuba relations.
He also congratulated Xi on rounding off a fruitful visit to Latin America.
For his part, Xi expressed his deep appreciation of the profound affection the Cuban Communist Party, government and people hold towards China, and conveyed his wish that bilateral relations will advance steadily and bilateral friendship will last forever.
Cuba is the last leg of Xi's four-nation Latin America tour, which has already taken him to Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. While in Brazil, he attended the sixth summit of the emerging-market bloc of BRICS and a meeting with Latin American and Caribbean leaders.

SANTIAGO DE CUBA.—Justo al mediodía de este miércoles, los Presidentes de China y Cuba, Xi Jinping y Raúl Castro, llegaron a la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba para cumplimentar la última jornada del mandatario asiático en la Isla, luego de una fructífera gira por América Latina en la cual visitó también a Brasil, Argentina y Venezuela.
Al pie de la escalerilla del avión en el que viajaron juntos desde La Habana, fueron recibidos por Lázaro Expósito, primer secretario del Partido Comunista de Cuba en la provincia, así como Reinaldo García, presidente del Gobierno. A ellos el líder chino les dijo: “es un placer venir a esta tierra tan linda”.
El periplo por la Ciudad Heroica comenzó justamente por el cementerio de Santa Ifigenia, donde ambos líderes rindieron homenaje al Apóstol José Martí. Bajo un intenso sol, Raúl y Xi Jinping presenciaron el cambio de la guardia de honor y colocaron una ofrenda floral con rosas blancas en el sitio en que reposan las cenizas del “más universal de todos los cubanos”.
Allí el General de Ejército le explicó al mandatario asiático detalles del impresionante mausoleo que se ha convertido en visita obligada para quien arriba a esta ciudad oriental. Igualmente, le mostró los panteones dedicados a los mártires del 26 del julio y a los caídos en las luchas internacionalistas.
Luego, el recorrido siguió hasta el Cuartel Moncada, convertido después del triunfo de la Revolución en la Ciudad Escolar 26 de Julio. En este sitio cargado de historia, Raúl compartió con Xi Jinping anécdotas de la lucha revolucionaria, calificadas por él como “sus recuerdos imborrables”.
En el museo, que recibe más de 60 mil visitantes al año, caminaron por las distintas salas que muestran fotografías, documentos y artículos personales de los jóvenes que en 1953 asaltaron la institución militar. Entre otros valiosos objetos de la época, Xi Jinping se interesó especialmente por el fusil que el Comandante en Jefe usara durante la lucha.
Más tarde, se dirigieron hasta la sede de la Asamblea Municipal del Poder Popular, en el edificio del antiguo Ayuntamiento desde donde Fidel proclamara el primero de enero de 1959 el triunfo de la Revolución. Justo desde el balcón que fue testigo del trascendental hecho, ambos Presidentes saludaron al pueblo santiaguero que se había congregado en el Parque Céspedes al conocer de la visita de los dos líderes.
