Britain to back PM Tusk as European Council president(report)

London is prepared to support Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk as the new president of the European Council as a counterweight to incoming European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who is seen by many as a federalist, Britain's Guardian daily has reported.
Tusk has not announced he is a candidate to succeed Herman Van Rompuy, the current European Council president.

But British Prime Minister David Cameron is ready to tell EU leaders at a summit in Brussels Saturday that Tusk would be a strong candidate to lead a reform agenda in the EU, according to the Guardian.

The paper added that Cameron and Tusk discussed the summit in a telephone call on Monday.

Cameron thinks that Tusk would help balance the "federalist instincts" of Juncker, the Guardian reported, adding that the British prime minister also believes it would be good for the leader of the largest of the "new" EU member states to take on a major role in the bloc.
