President Barack Obama and his daughters had left the White House shortly before the security incident aboard Marine One on their way to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland where Obama and his family were to spend the weekend.
White House staffers and Associated Press journalists inside the West Wing were evacuated by Secret Service officers with their weapons drawn. One agent who was there said a person had jumped over the fence on the north side of the presidential residence.
The people who were evacuated later were allowed to return to the White House, but the area remained closed to pedestrians.

ReplyDeleteThe White House was briefly evacuated on Friday night because an intruder reportedly jumped over the fence and ran on the grounds of the complex shortly after President Barack Obama left the building.
Video footage showed the intruder was running across the White House lawn toward the president's residence.
The intruder had been apprehended. Evacuated White House staff and journalists were later allowed back into the building, but the area remained closed to pedestrian traffic.
Obama and his daughters had left the White House earlier Friday for Camp David, the presidential retreat in nearby Maryland.

Man climbs White House fence, gets arrested just inside mansion’s doors...
ReplyDeleteA man climbed over the White House fence and raced across the lawn and through the north portico doors Friday night, apparently only minutes after President Obama went out the south entrance on his way to Camp David, authorities said.
The man, who was not armed, was arrested just inside the doors, Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan said.
A Secret Service official said the location of the arrest “was not acceptable” to the service, and would be reviewed by the agency.
The official said that at least part of the reason that the man managed to get so far was that he did not appear to be armed or carrying anything. In addition, the official said, first family members were not inside.
The man was identified as Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, of Copperas Cove, Tex., Donovan said. Donovan said he was charged with unlawful entry into the White House complex. News of another incident involving an armed man allowed in a lift with Mr Obama compounded calls for her to go.
