Tripoli-based parliament says Egyptian strike assault on sovereignty

Libya's Tripoli-based parliament strongly condemned on Monday an Egyptian air strike in the eastern city of Derna as an assault on the country's sovereignty...

"We strongly condemn the Egyptian aggression this morning on Derna and which we consider to be an assault against Libyan sovereignty," said Omar Homaydan, the spokesman for the General National Congress, the former parliament, reinstated by the faction that took over Tripoli in the summer.

Egypt said it launched an air strike against Islamic State targets in Libya after militants released a video showing the beheading of 21 Egyptians in Libya.

  1. Egypt on Monday urged the international community to take a unified stance to face the terror groups, according to a statement by the Foreign Ministry...

    The appeal came one day after the Islamic State (IS) militant group released a video purporting to show the beheading of 21 Egyptians in the turmoil-stricken Libya.

    The statement said that Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri headed to New York on Monday to hold talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and other senior officials on means to face terrorism.

    "Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri will ask senior United Nations officials in New York to take strong, effective and tough actions against terrorist organizations that share the same extremist ideology," the ministry's spokesman, Badr Abdel-Aaty, said in the statement.

    Earlier in the day, Egypt announced for the first time launching airstrikes against IS targets in Libya.

    Head of the Libyan air forces, Saqer al-Joroushi, said later that the raids killed over 40 suspected IS militants.

    Meanwhile, official MENA news agency reported that Egypt and France called for a UN Security Council meeting to take new anti-IS action following a phone call between Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and his French counterpart, Francois Hollande.

    Libya's unrecognized Tripoli-based parliament blasted Egypt's airstrike against Islamic State (ISIL) targets on Monday, in which Libya's air force, allied to the recognized government, also participated.

    "We strongly condemn the Egyptian aggression this morning on Derna and which we consider to be an assault against Libyan sovereignty," Omar Homaydan, the spokesman of the parliament announced.

    Meanwhile, Libya's internationally recognized prime minister, Abdullah al-Thani called for airstrikes against ISIL and al-Qaeda targets in the country.

    Bei ägyptischen und libyschen Luftangriffen auf Stellungen der Miliz Islamischer Staat (IS) in Libyen sind nach offiziellen Angaben Dutzende Extremisten getötet worden. Der libyische Luftwaffenkommandeur Saker al-Dschoruschi erklärte im ägyptischen Staatsfernsehen, es seien Waffenlager und Kommunikationszentren der Islamisten getroffen worden. "Die Zahl der Toten liegt mit Sicherheit nicht unter 40 bis 50", erklärte Al-Dschoruschi.
