"We are not going to fight the Russians in Ukraine and we have been very clear and open about that. We also have to make a very sharp distinction between the guarantee that we extend to our NATO partners, including the Baltic states, where there is a hard red line protecting them," Hammond said.
The British diplomat was briefly interrupted by the host of The Andrew Marr Show to clarify whether "any Russian incursion" toward the 28-member military bloc would result in war.
"Any Russian incursion into the Baltics would entitle the Baltic countries to seek to invoke Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which is the mutual defense guarantee which underpins NATO," Hammond responded.
Article 5 of the Washington Treaty asserts a unified security doctrine where an attack against one member may be countered by all members with the use of armed force.
Western countries have maintained their accusations that Russia is a party to the internal conflict in Ukraine, claims unequivocally and repeatedly denied by Moscow as groundless.
Russia, for its part, has on numerous occasions pointed to an unprecedented expansion of NATO toward its western border.

ReplyDeleteO envio do armamento pesado pretende "demonstrar ao [presidente Vladimir] Putin e à Rússia a determinação de que podemos atuar coletivamente", disse à agência noticiosa AFP o general John O'Conner, quando assistia à entrega do equipamento no porto de Riga, capital da Letónia.
Entre material militar descarregado incluem-se tanques Abrams, veículos blindados e ainda equipamento de apoio, com o general norte-americano a referir que este equipamento "vai permanecer o tempo que for necessário para conter a agressão russa".
A Estónia, Letónia e Lituânia, as três antigas repúblicas soviéticas do Báltico e membros da NATO e da União Europeia (UE) desde 2004, possuem uma reduzida capacidade militar.
A anexação da península da Crimeia por Moscovo em 2013, e a sua ingerência no conflito no leste da Ucrânia motivaram que a NATO concentrasse uma particular atenção nos seus vulneráveis aliados do Báltico.
