Greek island locals to be recommended as Nobel peace prize nominees

Local residents of the Greek islands of Lesbos, Kos, Chíos, Samos, Rhodes and Leros are to be nominated for the Nobel peace prize for their frontline role in receiving hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing war and conflict who have arrived on their shores after making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean sea.

The Greek islanders, including fisherman who have given up their work to aid the refugees, are being nominated with the support of their national government, the Guardian reports.

Academics from Oxford, Princeton, Harvard, Cornell and Copenhagen universities are currently drafting a submission reccomending the Greek locals for one of the world's most prestigious prizes ahead of the February 1 nomination deadline.

More than one million migrants and refugees reached Europe in 2015, including over 970,000 who made the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean to Greek shores, the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration reports.

Those behind the nomination have already met with Greek minister for migration Yiannis Mouzalas who has pledged the government's support, the Guardian reports...
