The German Interior Minister demanded Thursday a swift and complete explanation on the circumstances surrounding the suicide of a suspected Islamist who was being held in a prison cell.
Speaking on German television channel ZDF, Thomas de Maizière said the death of the Syrian refugee Jaber al-Bakr, 22, hindered the ongoing investigation to locate any accomplices and ringleaders planning to execute attacks in Germany.
"What happened last night really demands a swift and complete inquest by the local judicial authorities" said the minister.
A few hours after de Maziere' s statement, Sebastian Gemkow, the Justice Minister of Saxony's regional government gave a press conference, Thursday morning, and said that Al-Bakr had hanged himself inside his cell by tying his shirt to the jailbars, although the prison psychologists had previously discarded any risk of suicide.
