The Scottish National Party overwhelmingly backed on Friday a resolution, which says the country should be ready for a new independence referendum and subsequently strive for EU membership as an independent country.
According to the document, SNP delegates considered "seizure" of Scotland from Europe against the Scots' will democratically unacceptable.
"If no viable solution to safeguard our membership as part of the UK exists, Scotland should prepare for a second independence referendum and seek to remain in Europe as an independent country," the resolution read.
The SNP Congress expressed its disappointment with the fact that the United Kingdom voted for leaving the European Union as a single entity, but stressed that the democratic will of Scotland should be respected.
