On Thursday afternoon, Syrian authorities confirmed that 12 civilians were killed and over 200 wounded after Jaysh al-Fateh fired hundreds of rockets into government-held Aleppo.
Using a mixture of elephant rockets, Howitzers, BM-21 Grad launchers, and improvised artillery, Islamist rebels of the Jaish al-Fateh coalition pounded the densely populated New Aleppo district, 3000 Apartment Project, and al-Zahraa neighbourhood after reports of a military build-up by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the area.
At least 6 personnel of the SAA were also killed in the initial bombardment, including senior commanders of the Republican Guard.
The artillery bombardment was followed by four consecutive suicide bombings and a wave of 'Inghimasis' fighters who tried to breach the SAA's defensive line in western Aleppo.
At least one of the suicide bombers was intercepted by a SAA tank at the last moment.
Meanwhile, Jaysh al-Fateh claimed its fighters had captured several buildings in the 3000 Apartment Project and stormed the western part of the New Aleppo district.
However, Al-Masdar News enquired with a military source in Aleppo who denied the SAA had lost any ground in the city today and insisted the initial assault had been fully repelled.
