Israel will be defending its own security interests amid Russian and US potential joint attempts to reach a political settlement in war-torn Syria after US President-elect Donald Trump assumes office in January, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Wednesday.
According Lieberman, the Russian side has high expectations to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis working together with Trump's administration.
"I think that we will try to explain to the both sides [Moscow and Washington] what our problems, what our interests in this solution, and I am sure that we are able to defend our interests and our security interests even if the achieve direct deal regarding Syria," the minister said at the Jerusalem Post Diplomatic Conference.
At the same time, Lieberman did not specify the requirements, which could be presented to Moscow and Washington.
In April, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Tel Aviv would not obstruct the diplomatic settlement in Syria if it is not done at the expense of Israeli security. According to Netanyahu, Israel is interested in eliminating Daesh terrorist group and Iran-backed Hezbollah Shiite movement from Syria.
