South Korea is on maximum alert in view of the possibility of North Korea launching a ballistic missile to coincide with presidential elections in the United States, an ally of Seoul, the army said Monday.
Speaking to EFE, a Seoul defense ministry spokesman confirmed the army has raised its alert on North Korea in light of a possible fresh provocation by its neighbor on Tuesday, election day in the US.
South Korean armed forces believe Pyongyang could use the American election day as an opportunity to send out a message to the next White House occupant that it intends to press ahead with its missile and atomic arms program despite international condemnation and sanctions.
The military official confirmed that US forces posted south of the 38th parallel are also keeping a close watch on North Korea.
