Afghan acting FM calls on US to release Afghan assets - China.org.cn

Afghanistan's Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi on Wednesday called for the release of Afghanistan's central bank assets frozen by the United States government.

Afghanistan and the U.S. are no longer in direct conflict, and the "fundamental challenge" of the people is "financial security," Muttaqi said in a letter.

Following Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in mid August and announcement of the caretaker government on September 7, the United States has frozen the country's assets in U.S. banks. Washington has reportedly frozen some $9.5 billion in assets of the Afghan central bank, decrying the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan.

Muttaqi said in the letter that Afghanistan understands the concerns of the international community and the U.S., but stressed that freezing the country's assets cannot resolve any problem.

  1. The Taliban (banned in Russia) are moving to the establishment of an inclusive government, however, their steps are still insufficient, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons stated.

"We have seen that there is some movement [towards the inclusive government], that they are listening <...>. Still not enough but an indication of some movement, which suggests to me that we have to keep pressing on that issue," Lyons said.
