Palestinian sovereignty gains momentum with recognition from Ireland, Spain, Norway

Ireland, Spain and Norway’s decision to recognize the sovereignty of Palestine will help move the needle toward establishing an independent Palestinian state, the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Palestinian leadership welcomes the contributions made by Ireland, Spain and Norway "in support of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination on their soil and in taking concrete steps towards the establishment of two independent states, including the State of Palestine," the statement reads.

  1. The ambassadors of Ireland, Spain and Norway to Israel have been summoned to the Jewish state’s Foreign Ministry after their countries decided to recognize Palestine as a state, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said.

The top Israeli diplomat said that he summoned the three ambassadors for "severe reprimands." "History will remember that Spain, Norway, and Ireland decided to award a gold medal to Hamas murderers and rapists," Katz said.

  2. US President Joe Biden believes a Palestinian state should be achieved through negotiations, not unilateral recognition, the White House said on Wednesday after Ireland, Spain and Norway said they would recognize a Palestinian state this month.

“The president is a strong supporter of a two-state solution and has been throughout his career,” a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said. “He believes a Palestinian state should be realized through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition.”
