Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation and announced the dissolution of the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly.

“I am dissolving the National Assembly this evening. I will soon sign a decree convening new parliamentary elections, the first round of which will take place on June 30, the second on July 7,” he said.

Minutes earlier, the head of the National Rally party, winning the French elections to the European Parliament, Jordan Bardella, called for new parliamentary elections.

The right-wing opposition party, according to preliminary data, is gaining 32% of the vote, BFMTV reported, citing an assessment by Elabe.

Macron's Renaissance party is twice as far behind and takes second place with 15.4%. In third place is the list of deputies from the Socialist Party and the Public Place party with 13.9%.

81 deputies are elected from France to the European Parliament, the National Rally wins the expected victory. Bardella opposed the supply of missiles to Ukraine for attacks on Russian territory.

  1. French President Emmanuel Macron suffered a heavy defeat in European Parliament elections on Sunday, with Marine Le Pen’s far-right party sealing a definitive win that underlines her credentials as frontrunner for France’s 2027 presidential vote.

Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) party, led by telegenic 28-year-old Jordan Bardella, won around 32 percent of the vote, more than double the Macron ticket’s 15 percent, according to the first exit polls. The Socialists came within a whisker of Macron, with 14 percent.

  2. The far-right was seen scoring big gains in Germany and France in Sunday’s EU election, opinion polls showed, joining the Netherlands in offering the first signs that an expected rightwards shift in the European Parliament is under way.

In France, Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party won around 32 percent of the votes, a 10 point increase on the last EU election in 2019 and some 17 points ahead of President Emmanuel Macron’s party, according to the first exit polls.

  3. French President Emmanuel Macron has dissolved the National Assembly, or lower house of parliament, and announced early elections.

"France needs a clear parliamentary majority to act calmly in accord," he said in a televised address to the nations. "I appoint early parliamentary elections. The first round will be held on June 30 and the second one - on July 7."

This statement can be seen as the acknowledgement of a crushing defeat of the presidential Renaissance Party at the elections to the European Parliament, where it won less votes (15.4%) than the opposition National Rally Party (32%).

Last time, the lowe house was dissolved by President Jacques Chirac in 1997.
