Hungary and Slovakia requested consultations with Kiev on the issue of oil transit

The authorities of Hungary and Slovakia appealed to the European Commission with a demand to hold consultations with Ukraine due to the suspension of the transit of Russian oil to the EU countries.

As Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó explained, this step by the Kyiv authorities violates the Kyiv-EU Association Agreement with the European Union, which states that Ukraine cannot disrupt energy supplies to EU countries through its territory.

“I spoke with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. According to him, they did not prohibit the transit of oil, but this is not true,” Szijjarto said, noting that deliveries have not been made for several weeks.

According to him, if the European Commission does not comply with the request for consultations within three days, the case will be sent to court.

Earlier, the Politico newspaper reported that Hungary is facing a fuel and energy crisis due to Ukraine's cessation of transit oil supplies from the Russian company Lukoil.

  1. Slovak authorities will use all the opportunities of EU laws to protect national interests amid the suspension of Russian oil transit by Kiev, Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar said.

Ukraine halted transit of oil of Russia’s Lukoil to Hungary and Slovakia via its territory due to blacklisting of the company by Kiev. Oil is delivered to these countries over the Druzhba oil pipeline passing through the territory of the country.

  2. The suspension of Russian oil transit to Hungary and Slovakia by Ukraine proves once again that anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union are working against it, Foreign Minister of Slovakia Juraj Blanar said.

"EU sanctions we have repeatedly disputed and which proved once again that they exert greater adverse impact on Slovakia and the EU than on Russia clearly state that Slovakia has an exception for oil import until the year-end. The Ukrainian side deprived us of the possibility to apply this exception," the minister wrote on his page in Facebook
