US sends 12 warships to Middle East amid tensions in region - WAPO

The US Defense Department has sent 12 warships to the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea amid Israeli strikes on Beirut and Tehran, the Washington Post reported, citing an unnamed defense official.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt and six destroyers were in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday, he said. A group of three landing ships and two destroyers with 4,000 marines and sailors was sent to the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The defense official pointed out that the Pentagon did not announce any additional deployment of forces against the backdrop of rising tensions in the region due to the deaths of senior officials of the Palestinian movement Hamas and the Shiite group Hezbollah.

  2. The Iranian News Agency (IRNA) reported that after the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran performed the funeral prayer for his body, Haniyeh and one of his guards were escorted from Tehran University to Azadi Square, with the participation of a large crowd of the city’s residents.

During the funeral ceremony, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said: “The assassination of the resistance commanders in Lebanon and Tehran is an indication of the weakness of the Zionist regime,” adding: “These crimes will not affect the path of our movement.”

Referring to the statements of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Qalibaf reiterated that Iran believes these actions took place with the support and coordination of criminal America, despite US officials’ claims in the media that they were unaware of the Israeli action and had no role in it.

He emphasized that Iran considers it a duty to respond to such crime at the right time and place.
