Trump extends 50% EU tariff deadline until 9 July

US President Donald Trump said that he would pause his threatened 50% tariffs on the European Union until 9 July, after a "very nice call" with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen.

Mr Trump had threatened on Friday to invoke the steep tariffs as soon as 1 June, saying talks with the European Union over his previous levies were "going nowhere."

"I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline on the 50% Tariff with respect to Trade and the European Union. I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025," he wrote on the Truth Social network.

The US leader added that "The Commission President said that talks will begin rapidly.".
