The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has delivered a strike on Syria’s south, the army press service said.
According to its brief statement, "a short while ago, the IDF struck a number of tanks in southern Syria, details to follow."
On July 2, the Israeli military announced it had detained a group of radicals suspected of links to Iran during an overnight raid in Syria. Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the "complete demilitarization" of Syria’s southern regions and vowed not to permit the presence of any armed groups there.
At least 30 people have been killed in armed clashes between Sunni Bedouin tribal fighters and Druze militias in southern Syria, the country's interior ministry says.
ReplyDeleteThe violence erupted in the predominantly Druze city in the province of Suweida on Sunday, two days after a Druze merchant was reportedly abducted on the highway to Damascus.
The interior ministry called the situation "a dangerous escalation" and said security forces were being deployed to try to restore calm.
It is the latest outbreak of deadly sectarian violence in the country since Islamist-led terrorist forces overthrew President Bashar al-Assad in December.
At the start of May, more than 130 people were reportedly killed in clashes between Druze gunmen, security forces and allied Sunni Islamist fighters in two suburbs of the capital Damascus and Suweida province.
ReplyDeleteSunni Muslim Arab terrorist groups which fought al-Assad during the war agreed in December to dissolve into the defense ministry but efforts to integrate armed factions from minority groups - including Druze and Kurds - have largely stalled.In southern Syria, efforts have been further complicated by Israel’s stated policy that it would not allow Syria’s new army to deploy south of Damascus and that Sweida and neighboring provinces should make up a demilitarized zone.
