Rubio calls on Iraq to disarm Iran-backed militias in call with Sudani

The top US diplomat on Tuesday called on Baghdad to disarm Iran-backed militias that were undermining Iraq’s sovereignty, the State Department said.

The comments were made in a phone call between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

“The Secretary highlighted the urgency in disarming Iran-backed militias that undermine Iraq’s sovereignty, threaten the lives and businesses of Americans and Iraqis, and pilfer Iraqi resources for Iran,” the State Department said.
