Trump says 'framework of a future deal' discussed on Greenland as he drops tariffs threat

Donald Trump says the US is exploring a potential deal on Greenland after talks with Nato as he backed off threats to tariff European allies that had opposed his plans for America to acquire the island.

On social media, Trump offered few details about a discussion that both he and Nato described as "very productive".

After rattling the transatlantic alliance with weeks of rhetoric, the US president said the meeting had led to the "framework" of a potential agreement.

US President Donald Trump said that a reasonable price could be set for Greenland, but did not specify what that price might be.

"Yeah, I could see that," he replied to a journalist’s question about whether there could be a "reasonable price" for selling Greenland to the United States. However, Trump did not elaborate on what price he had in mind. "But there's a bigger price, and that's the price of safety and security, and national security <…>. That's really the price, and that's the big price," the US leader stressed.

  1. Greenlanders are expressing relief after Donald Trump said in Davos that he would not use force to take the semi-autonomous territory. But at the same time, they’re not letting down their guard. In fact, Greenland's government unveiled a new handbook on Wednesday offering advice to the population in the event of a "crisis" in the territory.

  3. In its place, Trump said, would be a new deal that could satisfy his desire for a “Golden Dome” missile-defense system and access to critical minerals while blocking Russia and China’s ambitions in the Arctic.

“It’s a deal that everybody’s very happy with,” Trump told reporters after emerging from a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. “It’s a long-term deal. It’s the ultimate long-term deal. It puts everybody in a really good position, especially as it pertains to security and to minerals.”

    He added: “It’s a deal that’s forever.”
