Iran says it considers EU militaries to be terrorist groups

Iran speaker of parliament has said that the Islamic Republic now considers all European Union militaries to be terrorist groups.

The comment by Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf follows an EU agreement last week to list Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group over its part in the bloody crackdown on nationwide protests in the country.

Qalibaf cited a 2019 law as authorization for the announcement. That law was passed after the U.S. listed the Guard as a terrorist group and allows for reciprocal action by Iran against any nations that follow that decision.

  1. Iran has declared European countries’ armies “terrorist groups,” the parliament speaker said Sunday, following the EU’s decision to apply the same designation to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Dressed in a Guards uniform in a show of solidarity, speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that under “Article 7 of the Law on Countermeasures Against the Declaration of the IRGC as a Terrorist Organization, the armies of European countries are considered terrorist groups.”

It remained unclear what immediate impact the decision would have.

  4. The Iranian Parliament has recognized the armed forces of the European Union countries as terrorist organizations in retaliation for the EU's decision regarding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Sunday.
"According to Article 7 of the Countermeasures Act, in response to the designation of the IRGC by the EU as a terrorist organization, the armed forces of EU countries are considered terrorist groups, and the consequences of these actions will be shouldered by the EU," Ghalibaf was quoted as saying by Iran’s state broadcasting company.
Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that the European Union Foreign Ministers agreed to add the IRGC to the EU list of terrorist organizations.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that Iran will overcome EU-imposed sanctions and that any new attack would face a harsher response, citing increased readiness of Iran’s armed forces.
