Spain ‘will not be vassals’ to US, deputy PM says

Spain “will not be vassals” to Washington, Deputy Prime Minister Maria Jesus Montero says amid a widening row with the US over Madrid’s refusal to allow its bases to be used for operations against Iran.

“We are certainly not going to be anybody’s vassals. We won’t tolerate any threats, and we’ll defend our values,” she told reporters.

Trump has said Washington will cut trade ties with Spain over its refusal to allow its bases to be used in the US strikes against Iran.

  1. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has delivered a strong rebuttal to US President Donald Trump's threat to end trade with Spain by restating his opposition to war and what he called the "breakdown of international law".

In a 10-minute televised address, Sánchez reflected on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza as well as the Iraq War more than 20 years ago and said the Spanish government's position could be summed up as "no to war".

  2. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on Wednesday accused German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of failing to show “solidarity” with Madrid in the face of criticism from US President Donald Trump.
Albares told broadcaster RTVE that he has communicated his “surprise” over Merz’s response to Trump’s tirade against Spain in a White House meeting on Tuesday.

“When you share a currency, a common trade policy and a common market with another country, you expect the same solidarity that Spain showed towards Denmark, for example, when there were customs threats over the desire to remove Denmark’s territorial integrity in Greenland,” Albares said.
