US seizure of ship could indicate start of ‘new military assault against Iran’

Zohreh Kharazmi, an associate professor at the University of Tehran, says Iranian officials believe the US efforts for a second round of negotiations are merely cover for a renewed military assault.

“In the last round of the attacks in Islamabad, the Iranian perception was that Americans are not serious, as they withdrew amid the talks,” she told Al Jazeera.

“And this time again, just at the delicate moment of starting the second round, they attack the Iranian ships. So… it’s maybe a sign that the United States is to start a new military assault against Iran, and negotiations [are] only a cover for that,” she added.

Kharazmi said that Russian sources indicate that the US is amassing troops and ammunition in the region, a sign that Iranian officials take as “an indication of the beginning of a new phase of military attack against Iran”.

  1. An Iranian cargo vessel that was seized earlier by the US forces was traveling en route to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported.

"Guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG 111) intercepted M/V Touska as it transited the north Arabian Sea at 17 knots en route to Bandar Abbas, Iran," the command reported in a statement on X social network page. "American forces issued multiple warnings and informed the Iranian-flagged vessel it was in violation of the US blockade."

"After Touska’s crew failed to comply with repeated warnings over a six-hour period, Spruance directed the vessel to evacuate its engine room," according to the statement. "Spruance disabled Touska’s propulsion by firing several rounds from the destroyer’s 5-inch MK 45 Gun into Touska’s engine room."

  2. Iran's military has vowed to respond after a US destroyer fired on an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman that tried to evade a US naval blockade.

"We warn that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy and the US military," said a spokesperson for the military's central command centre, Khatam Al-Anbiya, cited by ISNA news agency.

He accused the United States of having "violated the ceasefire" that has been in place since 8 April.
