Many EU countries ready to join complaint against EC over Russian gas import ban — Fico

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the heads of government of many EU countries were hinting to him about the possibility of joining Bratislava's lawsuit against the European Commission (EC) over the ban on Russian gas imports.

"We filed a complaint against the EC because Russian gas supplies will cease in 2027. We feel very strong overall, because many are telling us that we have a very strong argument [to succeed in court]. Many prime ministers are hinting to me that they might join [us]," Fico said in a video posted on his Facebook page (banned in Russia, owned by Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia).

In April, Slovakia filed a complaint with the Court of Justice of the European Union over the ban on gas purchases from Russia. As Fico said earlier, Bratislava does not view the lawsuit as a conflict with the EU, but rather as a necessary measure to protect its economic interests. According to the Prime Minister, the EU "absolutely needs Russian gas and oil."

Slovakia's contract for Russian gas supplies expires in 2034.
