Trump administration claims Iran war ‘terminated’ before 60-day deadline for Congress’s approval

The Associated Press (AP) and Reuters news agencies are reporting that the Trump administration is arguing that the war in Iran has ended – due to the ceasefire that began in early April – meaning that the president does not need to seek congressional approval for military action.

Hostilities with Iran that started in February have “terminated”, a senior Trump administration official ‌told Reuters late on Thursday.

“Both parties agreed to a 2-week ceasefire on Tuesday, April 7 that has since been extended,” the official said. “There has been no exchange of fire between US Armed Forces and ‌Iran since Tuesday, April 7.”

Using such a rationale, the administration has not yet met the requirement mandated by the 1973 War Powers Resolution, a law which states that the president must seek formal approval from Congress for military action that extends beyond 60 days, AP said.

Under the resolution, Trump had until Friday – day 60 of the war – to seek congressional authorisation for his war on Iran or cease fighting.
