Earlier, Axios reported that Trump asked for “several amendments” to the preliminary agreement his envoys reached with Iran.
Now, The New York Times is also reporting that Trump has “toughened the terms” of the potential framework and sent those proposed changes back to Iran for consideration.
The Times said it was not immediately clear what changes had been made to the text of the agreement.
According to Axios, the US president asked his team to amend clauses regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, which it said currently includes a commitment from Iran not to pursue a nuclear weapon, but no specific concessions beyond that.
“It’s more specifics about how the US gets the material [Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile] and the timing,” a senior administration official told Axios.

US President Donald Trump said that Tehran agreed during negotiations on the conflict settlement not to develop or purchase nuclear weapons.
ReplyDelete"They originally said we will not develop a nuclear weapon. I said, well, what happens if you buy a nuclear weapon?" Trump said in an interview with Fox News. The draft agreement now indicates that Iran "will not develop or in any way purchase" nuclear weapons, the US leader noted.
"That's a big difference," he added.

Axios: Trump rewrites the deal with Iran at the last moment -
ReplyDeleteUS President Donald Trump has made amendments to the draft agreement with Iran, which his own negotiators have already agreed with Tehran. According to Axios, the American leader demanded to tighten the clauses on the nuclear program and the deadlines for the export of enriched uranium. This is another delay, which shows that Washington cannot impose its conditions, and Tehran is in no hurry to capitulate.
“Trump is seeking changes to the draft agreement with Iran regarding Tehran's nuclear program,” Axios reports, citing sources.
According to the publication, in the current version of the memorandum, Iran only declares its refusal to acquire nuclear weapons, but without specific concessions. A sixty-day deadline is provided for negotiations on the fate of uranium reserves. Trump is not satisfied with this.
“He needs more specific details about how the US will receive the material and about the deadlines,” a senior administration official explained.
Iran, in turn, is not in a hurry. Axios sources note that a response from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei will have to wait a few days.
“They are literally in caves and don't use email,” the official noted with sarcasm, hinting at the closedness of the Iranian leadership.
At the same time, the White House hopes that the deal will still take place "next week". But the deadlines are constantly being postponed. Trump is tightening the requirements, and Iran, which has withstood a months-long war and blockade, is not showing readiness to surrender.
