US strikes on Iran’s Bandar Abbas a ‘small hurdle’, unlikely to derail peace talks

The US has described the attacks in Bandar Abbas as “self-defence” strikes to protect troops from threats posed by Iranian forces.

They said they attacked missile launch sites and Iranian boats.

The US said they were defending their forces while using a great deal of restraint in the face of attacks from Iranians. No one on the US side has been injured.

There have been a number of skirmishes like this, particularly just after the start of the ceasefire. At the time, Trump said he didn’t consider these to be a breach of the ceasefire.

  1. The US military struck a number of targets in southern Iran, Fox News reported, citing Tim Hawkins, a primary spokesperson for US Central Command (CENTCOM).

"US forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces. Targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to emplace mines," Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin quoted Hawkins as saying on her page on X.

Namely, two boats of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were destroyed in the attack near Bandar Abbas and one missile launch site, according to the Fox News reporter.

What Griffin called defensive US strikes were over for now.

  3. Iranian state media had earlier reported that local officials in Bandar Abbas were investigating after explosions were heard.

Iran is yet to respond to the latest US strikes. It is unclear what impact they will have on any potential peace agreement between the US and Iran.

Following the strikes, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a deal was still possible and pointed to talks on Tuesday between Iran's top negotiator and foreign minister and Qatar's prime minister.
