Russia is currently examining its legal avenues in response to Britain's plans to sell over 100,000 tons of oil from the Smyrtos tanker, which was seized in the English Channel while en route from Ust-Luga. Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that if legal options are available, they will be thoroughly explored and pursued to the fullest extent.
"There are certainly legal options," Peskov affirmed. "They will be studied carefully, and the situation will be analyzed. Should such legal avenues exist, they will be actively pursued - both against those making the decisions, as well as those involved in selling and purchasing the oil. No one should have any doubts about Russia’s resolve in this matter."
Peskov noted that the issue concerns "the purchase, expropriation, and sale of products" obtained through "piratic methods."
Earlier, The Daily Telegraph, citing sources, reported that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was considering selling more than 100,000 tons of oil from the tanker Smyrtos, which was detained in the English Channel. The newspaper added that the market value of the oil is approximately 35 million pounds, and the British government is considering donating the proceeds to the Ukrainian armed forces.
According to open sources, the tanker Smyrtos flies the Cameroonian flag. On June 5, it departed from the port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad Region; its destination was not specified.[TASS]

The Russian Embassy in London told Sputnik that there were no Russian citizens on board the tanker. On Wednesday, citing sources, the Telegraph reported that London wants to sell 100,000 tonnes of oil from the seized Smyrtos tanker and use the funds to support Ukraine.
France detained a Russia-linked oil tanker off the coast of Sicily earlier this week, President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday.
