Royal Marine Commandos have boarded a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Marines, joined by National Crime Agency officers, with the support of the RAF, intercepted and boarded the vessel in a six-hour operation - the first operation of its kind by UK armed forces.
The vessel, Smyrtos, will be held and monitored off the south coast of England as investigations continue, the MoD said.
Sir Keir Starmer said: "This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fuelling Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide."[BBC]

The British armed forces seized the Smyrtos tanker that allegedly belongs to the so-called Russian shadow fleet in the English Channel, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced in a joint statement with UK Ministry of Defense.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the statement, Royal Marine Commandos and National Crime Agency officials boarded the detained vessel as part of the first ever operation of this kind.
Open public sources state that the Smyrtos tanker is flying the flag of Cameroon. The 243-meter vessel is currently anchored near the British island of Portland in the English Channel off the coast of Dorset in the southwest of the country and is inspected for possible environmental risks or security threats.
There has been no information provided as of yet regarding the crew of the vessel.
In video footage shared by the MoD, armed personnel can be seen boarding the vessel by fast-roping from a helicopter.
ReplyDeleteFurther videos show them conducting searches of cabins aboard the vessel, while officers from the NCA inspect paperwork.
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis said: "Operations like this require skill, professionalism and courage. I pay tribute to our armed forces personnel and all those involved.
ReplyDelete"Russia relies on its shadow fleet to fund their conflict in Ukraine and our interdiction delivers a blow to Putin's illegal war."

ReplyDeleteFrench President Emmanuel Macron said on June 1 on social media that the French Navy intercepted a sanctioned oil tanker suspected of being part of Russia's "shadow fleet" on May 31 with British support.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the seizure by the French Navy as "illegal" and said it was "bordering on international piracy." He added that Russia was taking measures to ensure the safety of its cargo.
