At least 34 migrants have died while trying to swim to the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta on the northern coast of Africa, the RTVE broadcaster reported, citing Juan Jesus Vivas, the mayor-president of Ceuta.
Earlier reports put the number of fatalities at 24.
Vivas said earlier that the city has been flooded by around 60,000 migrants, or some 70% of its population.

About 60,000 migrants have crossed into Spain's North African territory of Ceuta from Morocco in the last 24 hours, Ceuta's president said, adding that at least 34 others died during the crossing.
ReplyDeleteThe influx comes after Spain's Supreme Court ruled that migrants stopped at sea while trying to reach Ceuta or Melilla, another Spanish exclave, cannot be summarily returned to Morocco.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the situation as an "attack" and said all illegal migrants would be returned to Morocco "as soon as possible". Several European leaders have expressed concern, some promising to tighten border controls.
More than 25,000 have returned to Morocco voluntarily so far, officials said.

Previamente, las autoridades trataron de cerrar el paso fronterizo de Beni Enzar, que conecta Melilla con Marruecos.
An increasing number of illegal migrants, who have made it to Spain’s Ceuta on the African coast of the Mediterranean Sea, have been asking border services to let them go back to Morocco voluntarily, The Maghreb Times reported.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the online news website, hundreds of adults and minors have inundated the El Tarajal border checkpoint, asking for permission to voluntarily leave the autonomous Spanish city and go back to Morocco. During their first hours in Ceuta, many of them "felt uncomfortable and discovered that reality was starkly different to the image that had inspired them to illegally cross the border of the city, given its extreme density and the inability to directly cross it from Ceuta to the Pyrenean Peninsula," the news website added.
Nor is it clear what kind of measures Spain may take against them, witnesses say, adding that limited core resources too have mostly influenced migrants’ decision to go back to the North African kingdom.
