Reports of fresh strikes in Iran after Trump threats

The US military launched fresh strikes on Iran aimed at keeping the critical Strait of Hormuz open to traffic, hours after President Donald Trump declared that an interim agreement to end the war was "over."

The latest round of attacks, which the US said was launched in response to Tuesday's assault on three cargo ships transiting the strait, rattled several cities along Iran's southern coast and left some areas without power.

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that the United States will retaliate each of its attacks with 20 strikes.

"We just hit them (Iran) very hard," he told reporters onboard his plane after the NATO summit in Turkey. "It was really retribution for last night. They hit actually three boats, not two, and when they hit, we hit back much harder," he said. "We hit them 20 to one every time they hit us."

The US military says its forces have completed an additional round of strikes against Iran, with the aim of degrading the country’s “ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners in the Strait of Hormuz”.

In a statement, CENTCOM said “US forces struck approximately 90 Iranian military targets including air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities, and military logistics infrastructure along Iran’s coastline”.

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Thursday that it attacked U.S. military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain in response to fresh U.S. strikes.

According to a statement from the IRGC carried by Iran's Press TV, the IRGC struck key infrastructure and facilities at the Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, as well as U.S. military bases in Bahrain's Juffair and Sheikh Isa, "in the first phase of a punitive response against the American treaty-breakers."

The IRGC also warned that its responses would expand to other bases in the region if the United States renews its attacks.
