Iraqi armed group the Popular Mobilization Forces says eight of its members were killed in joint Saudi-US strikes on its headquarters across Iraq, and four others were wounded.
Saudi Arabia said earlier it carried out targeted strikes against Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq, in coordination with US Central Command (CENTCOM), according to a statement released by the Saudi Ministry of Defence.
"US Central Command and the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces conducted precision strikes in Iraq, July 28, against Iran-aligned terrorists that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed to attack US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure," CENTCOM said in a statement on its X social network page.
"US and Saudi fighter aircraft struck multiple terrorist logistics and weapons sites across eastern Iraq in a strong response to over 30 IRGC-directed aerial drone attacks in the last 72 hours," the statement added.
Saudi Defense Ministry Spokesman Turki al-Maliki stated earlier that his country’s air defenses intercepted several UAVs launched from the territory of Iraq targeting the Kingdom's oil facilities.

The U.S.-Saudi operation was aimed at "terrorist logistics and weapons sites across eastern Iraq," CENTCOM said in a statement posted to social media. The Saudi Ministry of Defense also confirmed that it "conducted precise and targeted strikes," citing its right to self-defense.

ReplyDeleteU.S. and Saudi Arabian forces on Tuesday carried out precision airstrikes against Iran-aligned militants in Iraq following a wave of drone attacks targeting U.S. forces and Saudi energy infrastructure, the U.S. Central Command said.

"The unwarranted attacks against U.S. forces were not successful," it said.
Noting that Iran-aligned militias in Iraq had conducted more than 600 attempted attacks on U.S. citizens and facilities from February through April, the command warned that the IRGC and its "proxies" must cease such attacks or face further U.S. military response.
Shortly after the release of the statement, an explosion struck the headquarters of Iraq's paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces, according to media reports.
