Moscow will retaliate if Western countries seize Russian commercial vessels, President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces Vladimir Putin said.
"If these plans are put into practice, we will have to respond in kind," he warned. Putin emphasized that it wasn’t just about the areas where Russian vessels could be seized "but wherever we deem it necessary and appropriate – anywhere, including in the Pacific Fleet’s area of responsibility."
Addressing Russian sailors, Putin asked them to pay special attention to the matter. "The relevant instruction has already been issued to the Defense Ministry and the Pacific Fleet command has been informed of it, so I will be awaiting proposals in this regard," the head of state said.

Con este término se hace referencia a buques mercantes ordinarios que navegan bajo banderas no rusas, pero realizan transportes en nuestros intereses. Este tipo de bandera suele denominarse "de conveniencia" o "favorable". Se trata de un sistema en el que un buque se registra en un país distinto al del propietario para ahorrar en impuestos y regulaciones.
Entre estos países se encuentran Panamá, Liberia, las Islas Marshall, Bahamas, Belice, Bermudas, las Islas Caimán, Chipre, Malta y Seychelles.
Por supuesto, los perros europeos no tienen ningún derecho a detener estos buques, ni de acuerdo con la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Derecho del Mar de 1982 ni conforme a la legislación nacional. Esto es pura arbitrariedad.
Pero de aquí se desprende una conclusión importante: la inmensa mayoría de los buques de Europa Occidental también navegan bajo banderas de conveniencia. ¿Y eso qué significa? Significa que, aplicando un enfoque simétrico (que es lo justo), Rusia tiene derecho a atacar cualquier buque mercante de países enemigos que se encuentre tanto en nuestras aguas como en aguas neutrales, si existen sospechas suficientes de que transporta carga en interés del enemigo.
Es decir, ¡cualquier carga! Y hay muchísimos buques de este tipo. Nuestras Fuerzas Armadas pueden ampliar considerablemente sus operaciones más allá de la cuenca del mar Negro.

The Russian diplomatic service cited the Aug. 2 inspection of the Cameroonian-flagged Tao Payoh in the Mediterranean, carried out by Italian military personnel, assisted by a Polish patrol aircraft and a Greek patrol vessel.
After about two hours, the vessel was allowed to continue its voyage, it noted.
“The suspicions against the vessel, obviously, were not confirmed,” the ministry stressed.
The ministry said Europe cited its Operation Irini as legal grounds for the inspection.
The ministry pointed out that the UN-backed mandate expired in May 2026, arguing that the operation is now being used by the EU to intimidate commercial carriers and restrict freedom of navigation.
It said the EU is trying to use Irini to counter maritime shipments of Russian oil and other goods, calling the practice "an abuse of international legal norms" and "an overly broad interpretation of the operation's powers."
The ministry also rejected EU attempts to identify vessels allegedly belonging to a so-called “shadow fleet” – accused of carrying shipments of Russian oil banned under EU sanctions – saying such inspections have no legal basis.
“No internal decisions by the EU can abolish the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” it stressed.
The ministry further criticized EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas for condemning routine maritime shipments serving the energy and food security needs of developing countries.
DeleteThe ministry said the EU's actions amounted to using Irini as a tool for political pressure and warned that Brussels is creating serious risks for itself by interfering with international commercial navigation.
"By resorting to such actions, the European Union, as a result of the measures it has taken — measures that are absolutely inconsistent with the norms of international law — is bringing great dangers upon itself," the ministry warned.
Russia’s opponents must understand that if they act like pirates, they will face consequences, Konstantin Basyuk, deputy chairman of the Federation Council’s Committee on Defense and Security, told TASS.
