Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they launched coordinated drone and ballistic missile attacks on several camps belonging to forces of the Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government on Thursday. The flare-up follows four years of relative calm in the small Arab nation, which has been plagued by civil war since 2014 and sits at a strategic shipping chokepoint on the Red Sea.
The Houthis struck troops, depots, and camps in three provinces across central and eastern Yemen after detecting a buildup of Saudi-backed forces preparing for an offensive, the group’s military spokesman, Yahya Saree, said in a statement.
Eleven people, including a woman and a four-year-old child, were injured as a result of an attack by Houthis of Yemen's Ansar Allah rebel movement on Saudi Arabia’s Najran, Saudi-led coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki reported.
"As a result of Houthi terrorist attacks on Thursday in the Najran region, 11 civilians were injured. Seven of them are Saudi Arabian citizens, including a woman and a four-year-old child who suffered second-degree burns. [The others are] one Yemeni, two Egyptians, and one Pakistani living abroad," the spokesman said in a statement on his X page.
According to Al-Maliki, the Houthis struck civilian targets, violating international humanitarian law.

Seventeen Yemeni soldiers and officers were killed and several others injured in an attack by the Houthi group involving ballistic missiles and explosive-laden drones, the Yemeni military said early Friday.
ReplyDeleteThe Joint Operations Command of the Yemeni Armed Forces said the attack targeted forces carrying out operations against terrorism, organized crime and networks smuggling weapons and drugs to the Houthis.
The country’s leadership ordered measures to prevent similar attacks and a “deterrent response,” the statement said, without providing further details.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis say they’ve killed at least 45 people in an attack that targeted three military bases in Yemen’s eastern province, considered a stronghold of the internationally recognised Yemeni government backed by Saudi Arabia.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition said at least 11 civilians were wounded in the attack on Najran airport.
This is perhaps one of the Houthis’ biggest military operations against the Yemeni government.
The Houthis’ war strategy, which is now taking the fight to areas in the east of the country, is driven by a belief that the Saudi-backed government is planning preemptive strikes against the Iran-backed group.
ReplyDeleteMany experts and analysts say that violent escalation could be the spark for another civil war in the country.
The new toll came a day after government Emergency Forces reported casualties and material losses in Houthi attacks on several military camps and units, without providing figures.
ReplyDeleteLocal media reported that the attacks targeted government forces in the central Marib and eastern Hadramawt governorates.
