Beijing lodged a formal protest with Rome and the European Union over the visit to Italy by Taiwanese Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, a proponent of "Taiwan independence", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced on Friday.
The spokeswoman accused officials from the Democratic Progressive Party and certain Taiwanese politicians of seeking attention and promoting the island's independence under the guise of democracy and freedom. "This behavior is despicable and, ultimately, futile," she declared.
Mao reiterated that Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory and that Beijing opposes any official contact between Taipei and countries maintaining diplomatic relations with China.
She also noted that the one-China principle is a widely recognized norm in international relations and urged Italy and the EU to respect it through concrete actions.
