Russia summoned Denmark’s ambassador to Moscow on Wednesday because of an incident earlier this month in which a Russian frigate allegedly fired flares at a Danish military helicopter in the Baltic Sea.
The Foreign Ministry said that it lodged a protest with the ambassador regarding the “unprofessional and provocative” actions of the Danish helicopter directed at the Soobrazitelny corvette of Russia’s Baltic Fleet, which it said took place earlier in neutral waters in the southwestern Baltic Sea.
The corresponding statement said the helicopter made a “dangerous” approach toward the corvette, "threatening navigational safety" among others, and that all warnings transmitted regarding the helicopter's altitude were ignored.
“To draw attention, two signal flares were fired from the corvette in a direction away from the helicopter. The aircraft subsequently ceased its provocative actions and departed the area. These facts are confirmed by objective monitoring data and are indisputable,” said the statement.
It also said the ambassador was informed that Moscow viewed the maneuvers by the helicopter as a “gross violation” of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
“Emphasis was placed on the unacceptability and absurdity of the accusations leveled against Russia by the Danish authorities regarding the incident – accusations that are entirely baseless,” it said.
The statement added that amid heightened tensions in the Baltic region “directly linked to increased anti-Russian military activity by NATO,” it was stressed that a recurrence of the “reckless” actions could lead to escalation and create the risk of a serious incident.
