The French military has tested the capabilities of a laser-based anti-drone system aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
The trials, conducted as part of the "Lafayette 26" mission, marked the first time the system has been tested in an operational maritime environment. This was reported on October 27 by Cols bleus, the official publication of the French Navy.
The tests took place between June 4 and June 8. The experiment allowed the equipment to be evaluated under conditions it had not previously encountered, including air transport, crane-assisted loading, and exposure to extreme climatic conditions.
"It took four hours to install the turret (which includes cameras, lidar, and a laser cannon), the cooling system, and the control console," the publication states.
Prior to this, the U.S. Army also awarded its first-ever contract for the production of high-power combat lasers designed to counter drones.
