Albanian Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Socialist Party, Edi Rama, has stated that a higher number of police officers, relative to the number of demonstrators, have been injured during protests in his country than elsewhere in Europe.
On Thursday, Rama wrote on Instagram that while other European countries report a high proportion of injured demonstrators compared to police officers during civil unrest, the situation in Albania is "the reverse."
"The media were obsessed with a crowd that barely numbered 1,500 people... Its participants had nothing in common with the genuine problems, needs, and aspirations of real Albanian students and their families. At the same time, the police were subjected to constant, disgraceful attacks," the Albanian prime minister pointed out.
According to the data he presented, in Albania, there are 93 demonstrators for every 191 injured police officers; in France, 1,700 police officers sustained injuries compared to 2,400 protesters; and in Spain, the ratio is 33 to 893.
Similar figures are seen in Germany, where the number of injured police officers was several times lower than the number of participants in the unrest.
On Thursday, protests by students and their supporters continued in Tirana. During the day, the police installed additional metal fencing around the parliament building.
