Blockades of roads and ports by truck drivers have disrupted food deliveries in Italy

In Italy, protests by truck drivers have disrupted transport infrastructure and the supply of goods, as by Il Fatto Quotidiano reports.

The demonstrations were triggered by a sharp rise in the cost of diesel fuel. Striking drivers blocked major highways, logistics hubs, and freight terminals at the port of Naples. As a result, the delivery of perishable goods to the regions of Campania, Calabria, Apulia, and Sicily has been hindered.

It is noted that stores in the southern regions are experiencing a shortage of fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and meat. Furthermore, some gas stations have run out of gasoline and diesel fuel, the report adds.

Since October 18, Italy has been swept by a wave of street protests, accompanied by clashes with the police. In addition to Milan, law enforcement authorities have launched investigations into incidents in Turin, Brescia, and Bologna. The preliminary cost of the damage caused by the unrest across the country is estimated at €1.1–1.6 million.
