Around 50 million Europeans struggle to pay for heating, European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen stated in an interview with the Hungarian outlet 444.
According to Jørgensen, the coming winter will be difficult for both European citizens and businesses, due to a reliance on energy imports and rising fuel costs driven by a global shortage.
"We don't know how cold it will get, but we do know that we will need more fuel. And the global shortage is driving prices up," he stated.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg recently reported that gas reserves in Europe have fallen to their lowest level since 2009—and this despite the fact that, this year, Europe has already purchased approximately 16.35 billion cubic meters of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG).
However, the EU plans to move away from both Russian LNG and pipeline-supplied gas next year. In the meantime, the price of gas reached $1,127 per thousand cubic meters yesterday.
