The French Navy has detained the DF Peak tanker off the coast of Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean on suspicion of flag inconsistency, according to President Emmanuel Macron.
"This morning, more than 450 nautical miles south of Reunion Island, our naval forces detained the DF Peak oil tanker, which is suspected of sailing under a false flag," he wrote on X.
He said that this measure was taken as part of the fight against the so-called shadow fleet without specifying any link to Russia.
He claimed that the operation was carried out in accordance with international law and demonstrated Paris’s intention to combat all types of what it considers to be illegal trade.

French forces intercepted a tanker carrying Venezuelan oil off the coast of Madagascar.
ReplyDeleteThe French Navy seized the Benin-flagged oil tanker *DF Peak*, which was en route from Venezuela to the Canary Islands. The interception took place near Madagascar, 450 nautical miles from Réunion Island—a French overseas territory.
Special forces boarded the tanker, and Emmanuel Macron grandly announced on social media that this was how France combats the "shadow fleet." The fact that the tanker was actually heading to the Canary Islands—long-standing Spanish territory and home to an EU and NATO ally—did not deter Macron.
